Melasma is stubborn. The right plan isn’t.

Those symmetrical brown patches are one of the trickiest things in skincare, quick to darken, prone to rebound. Which is exactly why melasma needs a careful, medical plan rather than an aggressive laser.

The short answer

The treatments that actually control melasma are prescription-grade skincare plus strict daily sun protection, supported by gentle in-clinic treatments we offer (microneedling, PRP for facial rejuvenation and exosome therapy), never a harsh laser. Aggressive lasers can make melasma worse, so our approach is deliberately conservative and skincare-first.

Understanding the condition

What is melasma?

Melasma is a common form of hyperpigmentation that appears as symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches, usually on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and bridge of the nose. It happens when pigment cells (melanocytes) become overactive and deposit excess melanin in the skin.

It’s strongly linked to hormones and sun exposure, which is why it’s so common in women, during pregnancy (“the mask of pregnancy”), and with the contraceptive pill. UV light and even heat make it flare, and it has a frustrating tendency to return, which is what makes an expert, patient approach so important.

Step one

How deep is the pigment?

Melasma sits at different depths in the skin, and depth changes both how treatable it is and which treatments are safe. Assessing this is the first thing we do, and why we never treat melasma blind.

Our approach

How Seamless Health treats melasma

Melasma rewards patience and punishes aggression. We lead with skincare and sun protection, add gentle in-clinic support only where it’s safe, and set honest expectations from day one.

Foundation · every plan

Skincare & daily sun protection

Prescription-grade actives calm overactive pigment cells, while daily broad-spectrum SPF stops results from rebounding, UV and visible light are melasma's number-one trigger. This is the non-negotiable base every other treatment is built on.

In-clinic · we offer

Microneedling

Gentle, low-trauma microneedling helps drive pigment-correcting actives deeper and refreshes the skin, used conservatively once skin is stable, never as an aggressive one-off fix.

In-clinic · we offer

PRP for Facial Rejuvenation

Using your own platelet-rich plasma to support skin health and renewal, PRP is a regenerative option we pair with skincare for suitable melasma patients, no aggressive heat involved.

In-clinic · we offer

Exosome therapy

Exosomes deliver concentrated skin-signalling messengers to calm and rejuvenate the skin. A gentle, modern regenerative add-on that fits melasma's need for low-inflammation treatment.

What we won't recommend

We won't blast melasma with an aggressive laser

It’s tempting to promise a fast laser fix, but aggressive, high-heat lasers can make melasma rebound darker, especially in richer skin tones. Real melasma control is patient and skincare-led. If a clinic offers to “zap” your melasma away in one session, that’s a warning sign, not a solution.

Common Questions

Melasma, answered

The questions patients, and search engines, ask most.

The most effective, evidence-based approach is prescription-grade pigment-correcting skincare combined with strict daily broad-spectrum sun protection. Gentle in-clinic treatments we offer (microneedling, PRP for facial rejuvenation and exosome therapy) support results, but skincare and sun protection do the heavy lifting. Treatment always starts with a skin consultation.

Yes. Aggressive lasers and high-heat treatments can worsen melasma or cause it to rebound darker, especially in richer skin tones. That’s why we take a conservative, skincare-first approach and only use gentle, carefully selected in-clinic treatments for melasma.

Melasma triggered by pregnancy or a medication sometimes fades once hormones settle, but most melasma is chronic and recurs, particularly with sun exposure. It’s managed rather than permanently cured, so daily sun protection is essential.

UV and even visible light directly stimulate the pigment cells that cause melasma. Without daily broad-spectrum sun protection no treatment will hold, the pigment simply comes back. It’s the single most important part of any melasma plan.

Melasma responds slowly. Most people see gradual lightening over 3 to 6 months of consistent skincare and sun protection. It’s a steady process, and maintenance keeps it from returning, which is why we set realistic expectations upfront.
