Sclerotherapy is a medical treatment for varicose veins and spider veins. A sclerosant is injected directly into the affected vein, which causes it to collapse and reduce in appearance.
It is not only cosmetic. The treatment relieves the symptoms that come with varicose veins, including pain, swelling and cramping, and it promotes your body’s natural blood flow and circulation in the treated area.
Being straight with you about candidacy: this is not for everyone. We do not advise it during pregnancy, or for anyone with a vulnerability to blood clotting, severe vein disease, or an allergy to the sclerosing solution. People with active deep vein thrombosis or superficial vein thrombosis are not eligible, and we will not usually treat a vein that might be needed for a surgical bypass in the near future.

- Bring compression stockings to your appointment. We may recommend wearing them afterwards to help healing and improve results
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing on the day
- Go for light walks afterwards to promote blood flow and prevent clot formation
- Protect the treated area from direct sun to prevent pigmentation changes
- Keep your follow-up appointments and report any concerns
What To Avoid
- No aspirin, ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory medication for at least 48 hours before the procedure
- No lotion or oil on the treatment area for 12 hours before your appointment
- Avoid tetracycline or minocycline for 7 to 10 days either side. These antibiotics can stain the skin after sclerotherapy
- Avoid strenuous exercise for a few days afterwards. Give yourself time to heal
